About the Gorgons

Why are the three first albums called a trilogy?

The first three albums take place in different time eras. But there are recurring characters: Ariel and her fellow Angels are timeless beings and do not die. They are vulnerable and can be hurt and killed, but they will not die of natural causes.

The Gorgons are a species who are much more technologically and scientifically developed and have found ways to live for hundreds of years. So the Gorgons in the trilogy are the same over the three stories.

The humanoids are special: they are mortal, cannot live longer than about 80 years of age, but for one reason or another some of the humanoids are reborn in later eras. They do not remember however their past lives, and are often called different names or have different roles: e.g. Mac in “Origins” becomes “Maximilian van Lichtenstein” in “War for the Heavens” and Max in “An Ordinary Man”. Zadie in “War for the Heavens” becomes Bambi in “An Ordinary Man”. As for Zorn his descendants do not always have his appearance, but they can be easily recognized by their white hair, like Zoroaster, Medusa, or Zorn himself.

Why is album 4 not part of the trilogy, making it a tetralogy?

The fourth album “Resurrection” is all about “Malika”, the daughter of Ariel and Max. However Ariel and Max as well as Zadie, Zorn and other characters are no longer part of it.

That does not go for the Gorgons, they are still the same as in the trilogy, even though in album 4 some changes will be revealed too. So the story of album 4 is really a sequel to the trilogy and not part of it.

Will there be more albums to come?

Yes. The way it looks now there will be 3 prequels dedicated specifically to the true origins of each species. Every album will stand on its own. The first pages of Origins of the Angels are already published.

And there are also two more sequels in the pipeline: one about Malika training a younger kid, and one about Malika being faced with another, but hostile, Angel.

.

Will the current albums ever come to an end?

Yes. Definitely. But I am not sure what the end will be, yet. As you can see from the different storylines they are slowly growing to an apotheosis. But the stories grow day by day.

Why do you opt for a day-by-day approach?

Because I like this kind of creation process. I have a broad idea about where I want to go with the albums, and future sequels and prequels, but the advantage of this specific approach helps me in my creation process.

It happens regularly that freshly published pages or even newly created images inspire me to go into another direction than I originally thought. So it feels like the characters and storylines sort of lead their own life and as such also inspire me.

Finally, it also reminds me of the old comics that were published on a daily basis in the newspapers.

How is it possible that one dragon in “Origins” killed all the rest of the Angels’ dragons?

As is already suggested in the story this Beast could be compared to the classical Viking berserkers. Like berserkers this dragon was in a fever caused by the worm that was planted into its brain.

Just like berserkers who in battle were subject to fits of frenzy. They would howl like wild beasts, foam at the mouth, and gnaw the rims of their shields. According to belief, during these fits, they were immune to steel and fire, and made great havoc in the ranks of the enemy. When this fever abated, they were weak and tame.

This reference to the berserkers also lead to the title of the page “Ragnarok”, which in Norse mythology is a foretold series of impending events, including a great battle in which numerous great Norse mythological figures will perish. After these events, the world will rise again, cleansed and fertile, the surviving and returning gods will meet, and the world will be repopulated by two human survivors. This storyline will in a different form definitely appear in the storyline later.

Why do the Gorgons sometimes powder their faces and bodies.

First of all the powdering is an old Gorgon tradition, where people in high positions powder their faces and bodies, to look like the gods they worship. It is not uncommon to decorate their body after it has been powdered with blue veins and/or surfacing tattoos.

The three clones in Angelic Wars consider themselves gods, and as such apply this habit, especially when they want to show their authority to others.

Why do the Gorgons in “Resurrection” wear masks?

First of all the powdering is an old Gorgon tradition, where people in high positions powder their faces and bodies, to look like the gods they worship. It is not uncommon to decorate their body after it has been powdered with blue veins and/or surfacing tattoos.

The three clones in Angelic Wars consider themselves gods, and as such apply this habit, especially when they want to show their authority to others.

In “Resurrection” times have evolved. We are centuries into the future and the Gorgons no longer powder their faces since they no longer believe in their gods and adhere a more cynical down to earth vision of life. The use of masks has a practical use. With the masks they can hide their true nature and descent at will.

Why is Gaius almost naked at page XXIV of “Origins” when he goes to Agrippa?

It is a direct result of the events at page XVII of “Origins” where both Gaius and Julius hold Agrippa accountable for some failures. Since then Agrippa is starting to become more paranoid, and is afraid that one or both of his brothers might stab him…hence the basic clothing, to prevent his brothers from wearing arms when they visit him.

Why is Agrippa starting to dress like a centurion?

It is a direct result of the events at page XVII of “Origins” where both Gaius and Julius hold Agrippa accountable for some failures. Since then Agrippa is starting to see his two brothers as a nuisance to his plans, and he starts considering himself as the true leader of the three.

Is Agrippa becoming obsessed with armor?

Yes , he is. He becomes more and more paranoid. And apart from the fact that an armor protects him from possible attacks, he simply likes different armor designs, and starts collecting them.

Why is it important for Beowulf to have Valdarin at his side?

Valdarin means Warrior of light, fighting for justice and truth. He is highly regarded and respected among the dullahan and the faeries in general.

So the faeries will not easily move against Valdarin or at least having Valdarin at his side, the faeries will have doubts and discussions before attacking Valdarin and Beowulf, which gives them an advantage.

Why is Beowulf jealous of the female dragons?

Apart from the mating seasons male dragons live a secluded life.

This probably adds to the grumpy character of the dragons, but also since they have to fight other dragons, for domination of their living area and for mating, makes them more aggressive.
And it makes them ambitious since only the most powerful dragons get it all.

Why are female dragons easier to train?

Female dragons live in groups and male dragons live secluded.

Therefore female dragons are more social beings compared to male dragons. Compare it a bit with cats and dogs. The ones are more individual where the others are more social.
