When the time was there for Charles to leave for Scandza the couple vowed to write each other every day until Charles would return for the new academic year.
After not having received any letter for a week, Jade ran to the postman for news from Charles. The postman looked in his bag and did not find any letter addressed to her.
The next day the same process repeated itself. Jade ran to the postman, he looked in his bag, but no letter.
It took weeks before Jade changed her runs to the postman into walks. And the postman did not look into his bag anymore. He just shook his head.
Jade went desperate. She pleaded in her own letters for Charles to let her at least know what was going on, but she did not receive any answer.
In the end she could not bear it anymore to go to the postman. She just sat on the stairway and the both of them just exchanged a look. The postman felt really sorry for her, but there wasn't any news.
After a month Jade heard the postman arrive when she was in her room. She stepped to the window, but the postman had already passed.
Jade sunk into a deep depression. She did not want to eat, did not want to do anything and did not want to see anybody.
At the end of the holidays, when the academic year was about to start again, and Charles was due in, she decided to get out of bed. Nobody would keep her away from her studies. But for the next five years she would be wearing mourning clothes, because her love had died.
